10 Day Tour to take your breath away

Upon arrival at Glasgow Airport, we meet our driver and guide and depart for Glasgow City. Once in Glasgow, we enjoy a panoramic tour of the city. Our first stop will be to visit the Glasgow Cathedral of St. Mungo. It is the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Protestant Reformation. We will visit the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life & Art, which is a haven of tranquility in a bustling city. Our final stop of the day is the Riverside Museum home to an impressive series of automobiles manufactured in Glasgow and surrounding areas.

Today, we head north of Glasgow toward Oban by way of Stirling and Glencoe Valley. First, we visit Stirling Castle. Situated on a volcanic outcrop guarding the lowest crossing point of the River Forth, Stirling Castle is a great symbol of Scottish independence and a source of enduring national pride. Next, we journey along the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, immortalized in the well-known Scottish song, “I’ll take the High Road”.

We travel further north to the stunning Glencoe Valley, “Glen of the Weeping.” We are heading north and west toward Iona. This morning, we transfer to Oban and take a ferry to Craignure on the Isle of Mull. We then enjoy the scenic drive across the remote island to Fionnphort, where we have a short ride on a passenger ferry to the Island of Iona. We walk past the old nunnery and the historic graveyard that contains the remains of many Scottish and even some Norse kings, on our way to the restored abbey church.

After seeing the work of today’s Iona Community, we walk back to the village and onto the beach. In the afternoon, if we have time, we might be able to arrange a worship service of Holy Communion on the Isle of Iona. We take the ferry back to Fionnphort and then from Craignure back to Oban.

The First Full Day

Our first stop will be to visit the Glasgow Cathedral of St. Mungo. It is the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Protestant Reformation. We can explain a lot of the history of Scotland standing inside this historic church. It’s beautiful. We will visit the St. Mungo Museum of Religious Life & Art, which is a haven of tranquility in a bustling city. This museum takes its name from Glasgow’s patron saint, who brought the Christian faith to Scotland in the sixth century. Our final stop of the day is the Riverside Museum home to an impressive series of automobiles manufactured in Glasgow and surrounding areas. We enjoy dinner and overnight at our hotel in Glasgow.

And that’s just Day ONE!

Day 4: Christianity’s Perseverance through Dark Ages

This morning, we transfer to Oban and take a ferry to Craignure on the Isle of Mull. We then enjoy the scenic drive across the remote island to Fionnphort, where we have a short ride on a passenger ferry to the Island of Iona. Iona is one of Scotland’s most sacred sites, and the gift of the island and its history for the West is monumental. It was a strong Christian center of learning during the Dark Ages; it kept the Christian faith alive. Today, Iona is responsible for the revival of Celtic Christianity. It is a holy and beautiful place. We are blessed to be there.

We walk past the old nunnery and the historic graveyard that contains the remains of many Scottish and even some Norse kings, on our way to the restored abbey church. After seeing the work of today’s Iona Community, we walk back to the village and onto the beach where eighth-century Viking raiders attacked most of the scholars. Their only task was to copy the Bible in an age before printing. And yet, the Scriptures survived. In the afternoon, if we have time, we might be able to arrange a worship service of Holy Communion on the Isle of Iona. We take the ferry back to Fionnphort and then from Craignure back to Oban. We return to our hotel in Oban for dinner and overnight.
